Everyone’s looking for ways to make losing weight fun, and skipping is one of those ways. You remember skipping rope – you did it with your friends when you were young, carefree and didn’t have a few pounds to lose. Well, you’re never too old to act like a kid, and skipping rope is a great way to do just that and work towards a flat stomach at the same time.
There are many great benefits to skipping to lose weight. Jumping rope is a high-impact form of aerobic exercise, and that means it burns of a lot of calories in a short amount of time. Jumping rope for 15 or 20 minutes can burn off the calories in a whole candy bar!
Since it is high-impact jumping rope is not for the weak of heart – literally. If you haven’t exercised a day in your life, skipping is probably not the best place to start. But if you already have a workout program, adding skipping is an excellent way to spice things up. Beginners don’t have to miss out either; they just have to start out slow.
Another amazing benefit of skipping to lose weight is that it’s so cheap! You don’t need a gym membership, DVD, video, bike, treadmill or weights. All you need to add skipping to your workout is a jump rope.
Skipping is a wonderful workout for both the heart and lungs, and it works the muscles too. Jumping is excellent for shaping up your hips, stomach, thighs and buttocks, and swinging the rope even gives your arms a work out. Jumping rope really is a total body workout, and you don’t have to do it for hours to reap the rewards.
Once you get used to jumping rope, you may want to add a few tricks to your skipping workout by trying one of these variations:
The Hopping Jump Rope
Jump rope first on one foot for a few reps and then alternate back and forth.
The Jack Jump Rope
Do jumping jacks as you jump the rope, first jumping with your feet apart and then jumping with them in.
The Jogging Jump Rope
Work your feet in a jogging motion as you jump the rope.
The Skip Jump
Hop over the rope with one foot while kicking out with the other. You can kick to the front or back, and alternate a few reps on each leg.
Skipping to lose weight not only works to whittle away those pounds, but it also adds a bit of fun to your regular workout sessions.
